Ice Cream Trends During COVID

Posted: July 19, 2020

Our favorite day of the year is here! It’s National Ice Cream Day! We have put together a blog post that looks back at previous comfort-inducing flavors and addresses the current ice cream trends.

Eating habits during COVID-19 have been trending towards comfort and nostalgia. With everyone at home, it has created more time to indulge and unwind. This creates a huge opportunity for innovation while staying true to those nostalgic flavor profiles. Consumers want something they know will taste good and appreciate the flavors of the past now more than ever. Nostalgia is a driving force when it comes to the current ice cream flavors since it is reminiscent of past good times.

Finding A Good Balance

So, it is important for us to balance comfort with excitement.  We want to help make sure your ice cream is what they crave by creating flavors that will gain attention from consumers. Balancing nostalgia, comfort, and excitement is quite the task. So, this means we need to be thinking outside of the ice cream tub. Now, let’s spoons into some of our previous Feature Flavors.

Nothing sounds better than a homemade dessert. Granny’s Apple Butter, a 2018 Ice Cream Feature Flavor, is a vanilla custard ice cream with cinnamon sugar pie crust pieces and loaded with an apple butter swirl. Another flavor featured in 2018 is the St. Louie Gooie Butter Brownie. Our Human Nutrition and Health is based in St. Louis and gooey butter cake is a classic dessert in this city. This flavor is chocolate and vanilla gooey butter gelato twisted with chocolate flakes, brownie pieces, and a brownie batter swirl.

Lemon Poppy Pound Cake

Our Lemon Poppy Pound Cake is a 2015 Feature Flavor. This ice cream is summer-inspired with the homemade taste of lemon pound cake. It is a Lemon cake frozen Greek yogurt base with pound cake pieces and a lemon poppy seed variegate. This specific flavor was an International Dairy Foods Association, Award Winner!

What is more comforting than an oatmeal raisin cookie? The answer is our 2014 Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Ice Cream Feature Flavor! This is an oatmeal cookie flavored ice cream loaded with chewy raisins and pieces of real oatmeal cookies.

To finish up our walk down the ice cream lane, we have two of the most nostalgic flavors of all! Both ice creams come from our 2013 Feature Flavors release. The first is our Peanut Butter & Jelly Ice Cream. It is created with natural creamy peanut butter ice cream swirled with a sweet concord grape jelly variegate. The next flavor will take you back to summer nights with a bonfire glowing. It is our S’ more Fun Ice Cream which is S’Mores ice cream filled with milk chocolate flakes. It is then swirled generously with a textured graham cracker variegate. These two flavors are reminiscent of childhood, summer days, beach trips and so much more.
