Accurate rumen-protected methionine bioavailability values are the foundation of precision amino acid nutrition. When nutritionists balance a dairy diet, they rely on these values to estimate how much metabolizable methionine a product actually delivers to the cow. If that value is off, formulations can miss the target, which raises the risk of under- or over supplementation.

To give nutritionists that confidence, Balchem evaluated Next Generation AminoShure®-XM at every stage of delivery. The work started with stability in the TMR and continued through two independent, tracer-based in vivo studies in lactating dairy cows.

Why the Methodology Matters

Many common methods estimate RP-Met bioavailability by measuring short-term spikes in blood methionine. These methods can favor rapid-release products. In contrast, both techniques used here measure supplemental methionine in biologically relevant pools, such as milk, under typical feeding conditions. Because the two approaches use different tracers yet produce closely aligned results, they give nutritionists a reliable value to use when formulating rumen-protected methionine diets.

FAQ

What is the bioavailability of Next Generation AminoShure®-XM?

Next Generation AminoShure®-XM has a characterized bioavailability of 60.1%. This is the average of two independent in vivo estimates: 58.2% from the seleno-methionine technique and 62.0% from the stable isotope technique.

Why is rumen-protected methionine bioavailability important?

Nutritionists use bioavailability values to estimate how much metabolizable methionine an RP-Met product supplies. Accurate values help diets consistently deliver targeted methionine levels and reduce the risk of under- or over supplementation.

Generation AminoShure®-XM?

Two tracer-based methods were used in lactating Holstein cows. The seleno-methionine technique was run at the University of Delaware, and the stable isotope technique was run at Virginia Tech. Both measure methionine use in milk rather than short-term changes in plasma methionine.

Does AminoShure®-XM Next Generation stay stable in the TMR?

Yes. Product recovery stayed above 99.5% through 24 hours of TMR exposure, so the encapsulation held up before the cow ate it.

How is this different from blood-based bioavailability methods?

Blood-based methods often rely on large pulse doses or short sampling windows, which can favor rapid-release products. The tracer methods used here don’t depend on a fast rise in plasma methionine, so they better reflect what a gradual, precision-release product delivers.
