Choline Offers Greater Bioavailability Than Betaine

An in vivo experiment was conducted with broiler chicks fed either radio-labeled (14C) choline or betaine (Kettunen et al). The uptake and total accumulation of 14C from each compound was determined in blood, liver, kidney, intestine (jejunum), and muscle. Each tissue was also partitioned into a lipid, protein and aqueous fractions and the 14C label associated with each phase was quantified at 24 h post feeding.
