Rumen health is often discussed and often blamed for a farm’s problems. Yet, our actual understanding of the rumen’s regulation is poor. During this presentation, we will explore what we know about the rumen’s regulation, discuss recent research regarding the rumen’s physiology, and where the gaps remain in our knowledge. We will also discuss practical considerations regarding managing and feeding cows for optimal rumen health.
Kirby is currently an Assistant Professor of Dairy Nutrition at Ohio State University. Kirby’s research focuses on rumen physiology and rumen health. He also investigates forage and non-forage feeding strategies, nutrient and ingredient interactions, and the role of specific nutrients in combatting inflammatory signals. In addition to his research program, he conducts an outreach and extension program that focuses on enhancing animal health and productivity through improving nutritional program management. He also leads an internship program that brings research and farm management opportunities to undergraduate and DVM students.
