Effective Sterilant

Ethylene Oxide is an effective sterilant that is among the leading methods used by the healthcare industry to ensure the microbiological safety of medical devices and materials. It is uniquely compatible with a wide variety of medical device materials of construction, including metals, plastics, and elastomers. Ethylene Oxide is also used to sterilize medicinal products, packaging and combi-products.

Medical Device Sterilization.

Ethylene Oxide is effective at low temperatures, enabling the sterilization of many plastic, composite, and other temperature-sensitive devices. Additionally, it penetrates packaging materials and diffuses into the channels and crevices of complex medical devices that are otherwise difficult to sterilize. It can be used to treat entire palletized loads of devices, destroying pathogens and assuring sterility of large volumes of product.

Ethylene Oxide is also utilized to ensure microbiological safety of a variety of other products, including certain spices and seasonings, cosmetic, laboratory and pharmaceutical materials and aseptic packaging.

In the EU, sterilization of medical devices, medicinal products, packaging and combi products with Ethylene Oxide or mixtures falls under the Medical Devices Regulation (EU) 2017/745 (MDR) even though Ethylene Oxide does not itself fall under the definitions of medical device or accessory if used during the manufacturing process.
